Data centres and AI: a socialist response
Queensland has received a proposal to host Australia’s largest data centre. It is the latest proposal in the nationwide rollout of enormous data centres across the country, part of the global capitalist AI frenzy.
AI is also the latest front in the global arms race; the speculation driving enormous sums of investment in AI technology is inseparable from the militarism spawned by the US-China rivalry.
Instead of building public housing, improving services, and making the desperately needed transition away from fossil fuels, governments are handing over precious water resources and energy supply to tech corporations.
Working class people will pay for data centres with higher energy prices and more climate disasters. We need a socialist response that puts our needs before profit.
